SOME FOOD TYPE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SPECIFIC CICHLID SPECIES





Electric Yellow cichlid

--A high protein flake fish food and small to medium size pellet Cichlid feed. For juveniles the same flake fish food or pellet Cichlid feed that has been ground up into smaller portions.







Neolampralogus brichardi - Princess Cichlid

--A high protein flake fish food or small pellet Cichlid feed. For juveniles use a flake fish food ground up or a specific juvenile powder food.







Blue Acara

--A flake fish food or medium pellet Cichlid feed. For juveniles use a flake fish food ground up or a specific juvenile powder food. A mid to high protein pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food will be suitable.







Calvus

--A flake fish food or small size to medium pellet Cichlid feed. A mid to high protein pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food will be suitable. For juveniles use a flake fish food or pellet fish feed ground up or a specific juvenile powder fish food.







Frontosa

--A large pellet Cichlid feed for these guys. They are happy to accept pellet Cichlid feed at the surface but are happier when the pellet Cichlid feed is presented to them in midwater. They also accept flake fish food as well but as these are large fish with big mouths the pellet cichlid feed is better suited. As they are a carnivorous species they require a high protein pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food.







labidochromis hongi island

--These guys are your typical Mbuna. Provide them with a pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food in the low to moderate protein range. This pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food needs to have an amount of vegetable content.







Pseudotropheus Demasoni

--This species requires a low protein spirulina based flake fish food or spirulina pellet Cichlid feed as in the wild they are mostly feeding on algae off the rocks they have in their territory which the aggressively protect.







Angel Fish

--These Cichlids are not too fussy and will accept flake fish food and pellet Cichlid feed on the surface or in mid water which they mainly inhabit. A high protein pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food will suit them.







Red Devil

--When fully grown these guys can exceed a foot in length. They are not fussy eaters and will accept a mid to high protein pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food. Larger specimens will do best with a large size pellet Cichlid feed.







Peacock Cichlid

--The Peacock Cichlids from Lake Malawi are by nature mostly bottom feeders and so will take sinking pellet Cichlid feed preferably. They are however not fussy and will also take flake fish food and pellet Cichlid feed in the mid water range. They are a carnivorous species and will need a medium to high protein pellett Cichlid feed or flake fish food.







Petenia Umbriferum

--This very large species will accept a moderate to high protein pellet Cichlid feed. For large specimens it is best to give these guys a large sinking pellett Cichlid feed.







Astatotilapia latifasciata

--This species from Lake Victoria requires a pellet Cichlid feed or a flake fish food in the moderate to high protein range. The size of pellet Cichlid feed for fully grown specimens is in the medium to large range.







Geophagus Brasiliensis

--This species are an omnivore and not really fussy. They will take pellet Cichlid feed and flake fish food in mid water and on the bottom. Feed them a pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food that is mid to high range in protein.







Convict Cichlid

--This species are also an omnivore and not really fussy. They will take pellet Cichlid feed and flake fish food in mid water and on the bottom. Feed them a pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food that is mid to high range in protein.





Melanochromis maingano

--This species from Lake Malawi will as with most mbuna requires low to moderate protein flake fish food or pellet Cichlid feed. Avoid feedind these guys the high protein flake fish food or pellet Cichlid feed at say 38% or higher.





Pseudotropheus estherae Red Zebra

--Provide this species with a moderate protein level range pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food as these guys are not fussy eaters.A moderate level pellet Cichlid feed should be in the 30% to 38% protein range.





Electric Blue

--This species being a predator species which feeds on fry in the wild requires a high protein pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food. Depending on size but if fully grown at 6 to 8 inches a large size pellet Cichlid feed is most suitable.





Apistogramma Dwarf Cichlid

--These little guys need a high protein pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food to suit them. The pellet Cichlid feed needs to also be a sinking type.





Kribensis

--The Kribensis is a Riverine Dwarf Cichlid species from Western Africa. They aren't too fussy with their diet and will take a small to midsize pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food. This pellet Cichlid feed needs to be in the 35% to 45% protein range.





Tilapia Mariae

--This species also from Western Africa is an easy to keep Omniverous species and will take most types of pellet Cichlid feed presented to it. A high protein pellet Cichlid feed however will give best results.





Lion Head Cichlid

--Another species also from Western Africa will readily take moderate to high protein pellet Cichlid feed. As these guys are a bottom dweller it is best to provide them with a sinking type pellet Cichlid feed.





Pseudotropheus elongatus Mpanga

--This midsize Lake Malawi Mbuna is a voracious feeder when given pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food but is not at all fussy. As with most Mbuna it is best to given these guys a low to moderate pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food in the 30% to 35% protein range.





Labeotropheus fuellborni

--This species requires a low protein pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food as they are predominantly a vegetarian. This pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food needs to have a high vegetable content in the low to mid 30s% protein range.





Julidochromis Transcriptus

--The Julidochromis Transcriptus from Lake Tanganyika in Africa feeds on zooplankton found in the aquatic plants where it lives. A mid to high range pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food is best suited. The pellet Cichlid feed needs to be in the small range as they have small mouths.





Dimidochromis Compressiceps - Malawi Eye biter

--This moderately large Malawi ambush predator cichlid will readily take a medium to large pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food . As these guys are a predatory species then a pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food high in protein will be best suited.





Pseudotropheus Saulosi

-- An unusual Lake Malawi Cichlid with the boys in blue and dark blue vertical stripes whilst the girls are a solid orange coloration. These guys as mentioned earlier with most Mbuna require low to mid protein pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food in the 30 to 35% range. They are not a large mbuna comparatively and so a mid size pellet Cichlid feed will be suitable.





Green Severum

--These guys grow pretty big to about 12 inches and so need a large pellet Cichlid feed but will also accept flake fish food . They are not particularly fussy and will take the pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food across the whole protein range.





Venustus

--These are also an ambush predator but are also as with a lot of lake Malawi cichlids opportunist feeders and will quite happily accept a pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food . A high protein pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food is best for these guys.





Fossorochromis Rostratus

--These are about the biggest Lake Malawi Cichlids available through the aquarium trade growing to 12 inches or bigger and so require a large pellet Cichlid feed to nourish them. They are sand sifters in their eating behaviour feeding on worms and crustaceans and so a pellet Cichlid feed in the moderate to high protein range is best suited.





Copadichromis borleyi

--This mid sized Lake Malawi cichlid is one of the less aggressive species. They are easy to feed and will take pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food across a broad protein range. A mid size to large pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food will be readily taken.





Iodotropheus sprengerae

--These were among the first Lake Malawi Cichlids to be introduced to the aquarium hobby. They are still popular as they are although not as stunning as some of the later introduced species are never the less still quite an attractive fish. Feed these a mid sized pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food . Although these are an Mbuna a pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food ranging from low to fairly high in the low 40% will not harm these guys.





Cyrtocara Moorii - Blue Dolphin

--These guys by nature are scavangers following the likes of fossorochromis species around and picking up anything left behind. This being the case they are not at all fussy and will take pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food quite readily. A mid to high protein range pellet Cichlid feed will suffice.





Neetroplus nematopus

--This Central American Cichlid species are mainly vegetarian and so it is best to feed them a pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food low in protein around 30 to 35%. They are a moderate sized species and it is best they are fed with a mid size pellet Cichlid feed.





Steatocranus tinanti

--These West African Riverine Cichlids are similar to the Lion head. They require a sinking pellet Cichlid feed or a flake fish food. Although they not a large species their large mouths means that they accept a large pellet Cichlid feed. They are carnivorous and so require a sinking pellet Cichlid feed or a flake fish food high in protein.





Neolamprologus multifasciatus

--These cute little Lake Tanganyikan shell dweller will accept pellet Cichlid feed or a flake fish food. This pellet Cichlid feed or a flake fish food needs to be moderate to high in protein. The pellet Cichlid feed needs to be of curse small in size due to their demure size.





Placidochromis electra

--These largish Lake Malawi cichlid will accept a moderate to high protein pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food. The larger sized pellet Cichlid feed will be best suited.





Jack Dempsey

--This is yet another of the large carnivorous fish species from Central America. A high protein pellet Cichlid feed will be readily accepted by these guys. A pellet Cichlid feed that is of a large size for adult specimens is best.





Blue Ram

--This Central American dwarf species will accept a high protein pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food. This pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food needs to be high protein to bring out the full coloration of this pretty little species.





Orange Chromide

--This along with the Green Chromide are two of the only actual Cichlid species endemic to Asia. They are an Omnivorous species and will accept pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food in a broad protein range. This species is best catered for with a pellet Cichlid feed in the middle size range.





Oscar Cichlid

--This popular species from south America is not a fussy eater and will take pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food. For large specimens it's best to stick with a pellet Cichlid feed and a pellet Cichlid feed that is broad range in protein.





Egyptian Mouth Brooder

--This moderate size Cichlid as the name suggests is endemic to North Eastern Africa. They will accept pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food. This pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food can be a broad protein range type.





Andinoacara rivulatus - Gold Saum

-- This popular large Central American can grow quite large up to one foot plus on some specimens. They are not a fussy species and will accept pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food in a broad protein range. due to their size a large pellet Cichlid feed is best suited.





Red Hump Earth eater - Geophagus steindachneri

-- These moderately large Central American Cichlids will quite happily take a pellet Cichlid feed in the broad protein range. This pellet Cichlid feed in the larger size is best suited.





Nimbochromis Livingstonii

-- This large lake Malawi cichlid is another of the ambush predators. This breed will take pellet Cichlid feed or flake fish food in the high protein range. For larger specimens a large pellet Cichlid feed is best for these fish.
